Tailoring

September - November 2022

This unit we learnt traditional bespoke tailoring methods to make a half jacket. It began with drafting the pattern, to striking the cloth, to canvassing and finishing. Tailoring feels like sculpture - you are working flat for a while, then you start working the cloth around curves to build the collar and lapel, it all coming to life. My knowledge of materials and how to build body was encouraged during this project, we used wool, silesia, horse hair, canvas and lining fabrics, along with specialist thread and interfacings.

This process involved countless hours of hand stitching, which means my skill improved exponentially during those two months. I learnt a lot about intuition as a maker, which has been very valuable going forward.

In addition to the jacket, this time however using theatrical techniques, I made a pair of shorts. These shorts had a back jett and side seam pockets.
